DARSKY – THE WALKER

“99 Luftballons” was the iconic—and, as it turns out, accidental—Cold War protest song that rang out on both sides of the Berlin Wall in 1983, and would become forever associated with the realities of divided Germany. The song made Nena her band international stars.

SCORPIONS- WIND OF CHANGE

"Wind of Change“ also served as a soundtrack to a political and cultural revolution. The song's sentiments of hope and peace stated by vocalist Klaus Meine not to mention the Wayne Isham–directed video that employed footage of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.

COLOGNE ART FEST

Art Cologne has been a fixture in the art world's calendar for decades. It is the world's oldest art fair for modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st century. Curators, artists, and collectors come together every year, the works displayed at the exhibition halls every spring are truly far from ordinary.

DOCUMENTA 13

This sprawling exhibition in Kassel, Germany is curated by Carolyn Christov to be this always overbearing show of mostly contemporary art, which is staged every four to five years in this drab industrial city in central Germany described as alternatively inspiring, meticulous, and sentimentally precious.

DRESDEN STRIEZELMARKT

The market is ceremoniously opened with the turning on of the world’s largest Christmas pyramid, standing at 14m, and the cutting of the stolen. It is one of the oldest and largest Christmas market in Germany, the Dresden Streizelmarkt, named after the original Dresden Christmas stollen, the Strietzel.

BERGHAIN

Berlin's Berghain is famed for its groundbreaking sounds and X-rated sights, but the club, located in the imposing turbine hall of a defunct East German heating and power station, is also a test case for how tourism and gentrification are threatening Europe's party capital.

SCHIKANEDER

The Schikaneder is actually one of the oldest independent cinemas in Vienna, having existed since 1906. Like its sister venue, the Top Kino, the floor space is divided between a cinema and a bar-cum-dancefloor. Films are often shown in the original language with German subtitles.

FUNF HOFE

The Shopping mall Fünf Höfe in the center of Munich was created from 1998 to 2003 after the coring of a HypoVereinsbank building complex. Since 2004, the official name has been CityQuartier Fünf Höfe.
